Berhampur: Authorities in Berhampur have apprehended a 27-year-old man from Karnataka, accused of murdering his lover and violently attacking her young daughter on August 10, as reported by Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M.
The incident came to light when Chitrasen Swain filed a report on August 11, revealing that her sister, Gayatri Swain, was discovered dead in her home at Sreema Nagar, while her daughter, Neelam, was found in critical condition.
Following the registration of the case, police initiated an investigation. They uncovered that Gayatri, who previously lived in Koraput with her husband Sadhu Charan Swain and daughter Neelam, had met the accused via Facebook in 2019.
Their relationship escalated, leading Gayatri to invite the accused to Berhampur, where she arranged for him to stay in a rented house nearby. The couple even eloped to Mumbai for ten days.
After Gayatri returned home, her husband reported her missing, suspecting she had run away with Sunil Swain from Manikpur, HinjiliKatu in Ganjam district. Although she returned to her husband, her in-laws rejected her, prompting her to live in a rented accommodation with her family.
When her husband was later transferred to Bhubaneswar, Gayatri once again contacted Sunil, who began a vegetable business in Lochapada with her assistance. They continued to meet secretly at her new residence.
However, a recent misunderstanding led Gayatri to distance herself from Sunil. During the Rakhi Purnima festival, she visited her village with her daughter, severing ties with him. Feeling humiliated and despondent, Sunil plotted to kill her.
On the night of August 10, after Gayatri returned home with Neelam, Sunil confronted her, resulting in a violent altercation where he fatally attacked her with a sharp object, as confirmed by the Berhampur SP.
The accused also assaulted Neelam before fleeing the scene, believing both were dead.
Neelam is currently receiving medical care at AIIMS, BBSR. Police have obtained CCTV footage showing Sunil entering and exiting Gayatri's home around 9:45 PM and after midnight.
A special police team successfully captured Sunil in Karnataka on August 16, with assistance from RPF personnel at Wadi railway station. Investigations revealed that his real name is Santanu Patra, 29, from Balasore district.
He is also wanted in a 2019 POCSO case involving the rape of his own cousins and had been evading authorities while working in Mumbai. He had connected with Gayatri through Facebook during this period.
